"Aigiri Nandini" stuthi is written by the great Adi Shankaraacharya. He is one of the greatest Gurus of Hinduism. He had written it to praise Durga Mata, the femine power of this universe. Durga Mata is the Mother Goddess of living beings according to Hinduism. Durga Maa deafeted a demon named Mahishasura who had a boon that he can not be killed by a man or a creature. Lord Shiva then made Adi Shakti Durga Mata with the help of Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu. Durga Mata was created by transforming energy of the entire universe into femine power. Adishakti came in to this universe with a condition that she will marry Lord Shiva. Therefore Adi Shakti took the form of Parvati Devi in order to marry Lord Shiva. Parvati Devi later took the form of Durga to kill Mahishasura. The battle between Durga Mata and Mahishasura continued for 9 days. On each day, Durga Mata took a new form(avatar) indicating unique energy for each avatar. Hence the fight that took place for nine nights between Durga Mata and Mahishasura is celebrated as Navratri. Finally on the tenth day, Durga Mata killed Mahishasura and hence we celebrate dussehra as a festival indicating victory of good over evil. Durga Mata was named as Mahishasuramardini which literally means killer of the demon Mahishasura. To describe all these characteristics of Durga Mata, Adi Shankaracharya had written the sthuti "Ayi giri Nandini".
